I am wondering if we can get a special Ventoux edition of the club shirt made – I would like to see if we get any Chopper sponsors for that though. I think we only need one day support as I will support the chopper ride – that should be 25 Euro 9where do you find the euro symbol on a keyboard?!)
I meant to post yesterday, on midwinters day, to say that we have six months to go ….. The story so far is:
Groups have formed to car share but there is also some possibility of a van (although probably remote and not workable)
We are going to camp and I have asked Veloventoux for suggestions although none forthcoming yet. Sean was going to look into it. I will get onto Veloventoux again.
I prvisonally booked Veloventoux for support on the mountain. Once all have confirmed one way or the other if they want itI can send off the final numbers.
So it’s down to training and seeing if we can get a group discount on the ferry, I think?
I sent this by e mail but not sure I got Sean M’s e mail right and couldn’t find Paul M’s mate’s e mail and don’t knw Rich A’s mate’s email (ask them to mail me):
Hi Adrian,
I am pleased to confirm that we are able to provide you with vehicle support on June 21st as discussed.
searching for details on Ventoux led me to find out that 3 ascents requires 150 km of riding – hadn’t quite realised that! By the way an earlier thread on Ventoux was:
I talked to Mark N today and he feels he cannot commit due to work, which is a shame.
That leaves us with (if I am right) 3 cars: Paul, Sean and Adam. Can I make the following car groupings suggestion and given that we are going up high on a mountain I thought an RAF motif might be apt so:
Adam – Red Leader (Co pilot: Anderson Navigator: Sheppard Rear Gunner: Pugh)
Paul – Blue Leader ( David Clark, Andy Grant, John McCay )
Sean – Green Leader (Paul Hunt, Lee Buttery, Mark Rogerson)
I have booked the Veloventoux support but we obviously need to agree chunnel and campsite. Any offers to organise this? What about a drink in the evening after John’s 100 miler? Chocks away
Attention all Blue flight.
Are main effort is to sneak up on jerry via a tunnel that was dug many years ago.
Jumping off point:
Folkestone:’D-Day’ ETD 18th June @ 1150hrs, ETA: 13:25 (CET) After the operation is complete blue sqn will conduct a fighting withdraw conforming to the flanks of our friendly call-signs, on hearing a whistle blast smoke will be thrown and we will begin to withdraw in a N’Westerly direction back towards the coast to pick up the transport on the 22nd June ETD:@ 1350hrs or @ 1950hrs, ETA: @ 1325hrs or @ 1925hrs.D-Day + 4.
Admin: The cost for the tunnel is 128.00 GBP. Split four ways works out at around 32.25 give or take a penny. All those guys who wish to share a ‘tank’ for this trip could you let me know if you are still interested? Once you have confirmed the gig then I’ll go ahead and book the tunnel.
From the Ventoux area its approx 520 miles at 55mph it should take around 9.5 hrs to get back to Folkestone and if we decide to empty the tank at 70mph it works out at 7.5 hrs, traffic depending! If you think the timings are tight could you let me know and I will try to get better departure times etc.
You may have read that Dave Clark has had to pull out and he confirmed that today. That leaves Blue Flight with a space that I am sure we will fill.
Travel:
Sean is suggesting that ferry is better than Chunnel in that it breaks up the journey much better. I can see his logic in that we can get a meal and have a chat as a group. It is a bit cheaper apparently.
Sean reckons it is 3 hours to Dover, two hours on the ferry (and queues/customs) and 7 hours to get down to Ventoux. A Thursday 7pm depart should see us in the campsite for breakfast on Friday.
He also reckons it cost him £120 in petrol and tolls.
Accomodation:
The campsite I was looking at is in a place called faucon. Veloventoux reckon it is 10 minutes from (I assume) Malaucene but it looks more than that to me. The advantage of being there is that it is near to the Veloventoux base ( assuming that is an advantage ).
Sean is getting Maz to ring some sites in Bedoin which seems to be the preferred first hill. Hence we can start without driving anywhere. We need to check on the price of their mobile homes (certainly my preferred choice) – the ones at Faucon were €53 per night.
Might be worth bearing in mind that we may not be allowed into the accommodation until the afternoon, assuming they run along similar lines to the UK. I’m sure we can find something to do if that is the case, but we might need to off load the bikes somewhere?

Or even go for a cycle, crazy notion I know, but we could go wild
It helps to be crazy some time.
Also it helps if I read the bloody blog, of course I am in the Blue Leader car.
As a general point: I am cool with whatever is arranged.
Just point me n the right direction and when and what to pay. I am just happy that you crazy folks are sorting it.
Welcome to the Ventoux page
Are we planing to purchase Ventoux shirts, we can order them from Veloventoux.
Also I’m happy to pay the 55 euro for support on the mountain.

€
Adrian it is control alt 4 and that should give you the € symbol.
€
€……..works for me too.
Apart from us all now being able to use the € sign on our keyboards, is there anything happening on this front?
Just waiting for Britain to sign up to the Euro, and we’re away!

Are we close to 3 choppers?
We are at 3 choppers, just got to buy them now. Missed out one over the weekend for £31. Didn’t meet reserve.
I need to find out how high the saddle on an original chopper goes …… if high enough will be borrowing one.
BTW loving that Ventoux pic
Duncan, winner of the R4RH Chopper, is happy to loan it out for another adventure.

Yes, unfortunately we are full at our place, although we have a campsite down the road from us (10 min walk) http://www.ayguette.com and also http://www.campinglescastors.com (10 min by car)
I hope this helps with planning your trip. If you require any more info please don’t hesitate to ask.
Happy New Year, all the best for 2009.

Also found this account of a fifteen hour attempt at 4 times up and down:

A fair chunk of that 150km will be downhill….maybe even half of it?….. Doddle.
@ Tony, now your talking my kind of language.
@ Adrian, don’t go scaring us all!
Reminds me of the Harry Enfield sketch with the ‘thick’ Geordie….
“how ay man, hav’ yer heard about that new bike…if yer peddle really hard up hill, yer divvunt peddle on the way down”
That reminds me … are we having a ‘fastest speed attained on Ventoux’ competition? I will not be entering it but just wondered.
@ Tony. As we go up Ventoux, side by side, for the third time I will be reminding you all the way up of what a doddle it is.
Fast is not a word I recognize!

Tally Bally Ho!
NEWS FROM THE FRONT LINE.
Pilot Officer Clark DFC, DSO and Bar was shot down over the Hampshire wolds and will not be on the Ventoux sortie.
Family issues I fear.
Blue Flight are going into action without a rear gunner. Look out for your tail, men. We may have a late replacement at some point from Flight HQ
Gather around chaps
